The Process

Commissioning custom woodwork transforms your home from being a purely functional space into a unique expression of who you are and what you value. It can be difficult to find something already made that fits you perfectly in terms of style, finish or dimensions. That is why I take care to understand your needs, your personal taste and your budget so that your ideas can be brought to life.

For many, the process of commissioning custom work can be confusing initially. But it is simple, and usually proceeds as follows:

Step One – Get In Touch

Fill in the form at the bottom of this page or use the "Contact" section of this website to get in touch. I will ask you some questions to get a feeling for your project, and may book a time to visit your space to take measurements and see how best to proceed. You can also book an appointment and visit the workshop to discuss your project in person.

Step Two – Rough Price Estimate

I will provide you with a ball park estimate based on what is known thus far. If the estimate is within your budget the process will proceed to the next stage.

Step Three – Design & Quote

Often there are multiple design options available. I usually produce computer models at this stage to help you visualize how they will look so that you can chose the one that suits you best. Once a final design is selected, you will be provided with a quote and if approved, the design and project becomes a firm commitment from both our perspectives. A 50% deposit is required at this point for most projects. An estimate of the lead time will also be provided. For Time & Material projects or ones that require a longer lead time, a smaller deposit may be negotiated.

Step Four – Construction Begins

This is where your ideas are brought to life and the excitement begins. Often a few questions come up at this point, and the smaller details get ironed out. But changes that cause rework or redesign are to be avoided at this stage, as they will incur delay and additional cost.

Step Five - Delivery and Installation

Depending on the project and what has been agreed upon initially, the project gets delivered and installed. It’s at this stage that you can begin to enjoy a piece that has been crafted especially for you.
